Rīgas satiksme is considering practical seating solutions and invites passengers to express their opinions
Rīgas satiksme is considering practical seating solutions for buses that could be purchased in the future when renewing the vehicle fleet. For a trial period, one bus has been equipped with seats without soft fabric upholstery, and the company invites passengers to share their experiences of traveling with this type of seating. The opinions will help to assess which seating solution is not only practical, but also more acceptable to passengers. The survey can be completed online HERE or during the trip on bus number 77599 by scanning the survey’s QR code sticker.
In the opinion of the company, this type of seating has several advantages – it is easier to maintain, has lower maintenance costs, and a longer service life. They are also easier to keep clean in accordance with hygiene requirements. Customers of Rīgas satiksme often point out that fabric seats look unkempt because they are stained, smeared, or otherwise damaged after previous passengers have sat on them. Therefore, the goal is to find a practical seating solution that is both easy and quick to clean and comfortable for passengers.
Currently, all Rīgas satiksme vehicles are equipped with soft fabric seats, which ensure an aesthetic appearance and, thanks to their padding, greater comfort. However, compared to seats without fabric upholstery, maintaining them requires more resources and employee labour. The seats are cleaned daily using a vacuum cleaner, but if necessary, wet cleaning is carried out using water and special cleaning agents. In case of major damage, the seats are reupholstered, and all seats are regularly disinfected.
The test bus with the number 77599 will run on bus route 60 during the first few days, but will then be used on various routes so that as many passengers as possible can try out the seats without fabric upholstery and give their opinion on traveling with these seats. The opinions received will help Rīgas satiksme choose the best seating solution to be implemented in the future when renewing the bus fleet.
In searching for various solutions, Rīgas satiksme also studied the experience of other countries and decided to try seats without fabric upholstery as one of the first options. Plastic seats have been successfully introduced in Stockholm, Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland.
